favorite moments of 2008

back again with my favorite moments of the year. this list is short, but it's comprised of the moments I remember clearest.

favorite sports moment: boston celtics winning the nba finals.

this year we saw team usa basketball regain the crown it should have never lost, as well as michael phelps do some pretty impossible shit as well in beijing, but while I'm a big team phelps supporter, i've been riding with kevin garnett and ray allen since they were rookies back in the mid-late 90s. when they both moved to boston in the offseason last year, i knew it was the making of a dream team... and last june, they proved me right. hey kobe... u mad?

favorite moment in entertainment: kanye west's glow in the dark tour

there's been more than a handful kanye mentions on this blog, as well as in my favorites... but if you went to the glow in the dark tour, in the words of mike gundy, you'd understand. this was more than just a concert... it was an experience... and if you're inspired by moments of pure emotion, then you'd have been inspired. i could spend pages trying to describe it to you, but... you'd had have to been there.

favorite moment personally: my birthday

I know... my birthday.. sounds real typical. not really. usually, i don't drink, go out, do anything of a typical young man in his early 20s for my birthday. but this year, right after the stroke of midnight, we hit up a few bars, and let me tell you... beer and patron are not your friend... at least not together. nevertheless, i had a blast and it will definitely be a birthday to remember.

have a merry christmas...

2008: My favorites.

well with 2008 coming to a close, I'm going to give a brief rundown of my absolute favorite things of this year. the categories are pretty miscellaneous, as some are probably real predictable, and others just being off the deep end.

favorite movie: the dark knight

did you even need to guess? this is probably now my favorite movie of ALL-TIME... much less 2008. chris nolan is a genius, christian bale is THE BATMAN, and god rest heath ledger's soul. he was a fantastic entertainer and he definitely went out with a career role.

favorite cd: 808's and Heartbreak

this is going to sound redundant and cliche' but seriously, this is the album i've been searching for my entire adolescent life. it reminds me of journey... mixed with kanye west... mixed with that bullshit techno i listened to in high school... mixed with usher/timberlake/early michael jackson. top 5 favorite cd's ever. best of 2008.

favorite gadget: apple macbook

for someone who's broken so many damned computers (got viruses?) this sucker has been a lifesaver. i'm going on 10-11 months with my macbook and haven't had a single problem. i don't care whether you think it's gimmick or not... mac > pc.

favorite woman: britney spears

call me crazy... but i've still got a soft spot for ol' britney spears and seeing mtv rig the vma's this year to help launch her comeback definitely didn't make me mad. maybe it's because she's from louisiana, or maybe it's because she's a country girl who is definitely a little unstable from louisiana, but she's still got me. plus her new song is really catchy.

favorite material item: air jordan III and air jordan XI (tie)

you knew it was going to be shoes. jordans for that matter. i can't lie. as a kid, i passed on a couple of opportunities to buy III's. just didn't appeal to me. but I guess the invention of youtube and reliving all those moments of mike killing them boys in the III's did it for me. and I just needed the black ones. I currently have 2 pairs... quite a hefty gift to myself. and as far as the XI's... let's just say when I missed the originals in 1996 as a 10 year old, after I wiped my tears from my eyes, I told myself I was NEVER going to let those shoes release without me owning a pair.

man who most gained my respect in 365 days time: kobe bryant

let me be the first to say... i still dislike kobe bryant. very much. but i've got to respect the man. despite what some "experts" (college students alike) may think, he doesn't have THAT much help on his team. he's got a 7-1 power forward, a 7-1 285 lb 22 year old as his center, a slashing 6-10 small forward who can shoot the 3 and a bunch of guys who can come off the bench and give you 5-8 points a game... hey wait a minute... why do I feel bad for him again? no really. kobe does his thing. the best scorer in the nba right now. he just can't get passed the celtics. and this year... probably not the hornets either. nice jersey, kobe.

tomorrow, my favorite moments of 2008.

louis vuitton x stephen sprouse

i can't front, i tend to have expensive tastes. i've also become more educated into designers in recent years, rather than just brand names. hence, the names tinker, murakami, marc jacobs, fujiwara are all names that i find just as synonymous as nike, vuitton, and the like.

louis vuitton (spearheaded by mr. jacobs himself) is launching a campaign in 2009 to release some pieces done between stephen sprouse (famed 1980s graffiti artist. if you don't know, wiki it.) and marc jacobs in the early 2000s. here are just a few pieces that caught my eye. if only i had a girl to buy something nice for.

p.s. don't the sneakers look like puma's?

Antoni Gaudi spotlight

This interesting building is the brain child of the late Antoni Gaudi. He was born in 1852 and belonged to the Art Nouveau movement. His buildings are known for the appearance that they are melting. His work can be seen all over Barcelona, Spain today.

fresh video: curtain$ night of the living dope.

i don't even know much about son, except that his name is curtain$ and my homie rob is in l.a. helping launch dude's career. fresh video.

P. ROD wouldn't be caught slippin

NIGGA you aint got no stripes

Sorry my Chris Brown fans, but it really irks me when people skate just to be seen and this is the type of image that comes out. Especially when just a short while ago they wouldn't be caught dead with no shit like this. But whatever, the love remains.

harness the gnarness

inspire.

if i could have one wish for this brand, it would be to inspire at least one person. i don't need to change the world by making some monumental speech, i don't need to cure cancer, just to inspire one person.

this inspires me, and i hope it inspires all of you, also.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives."

He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now.

I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes.

We hung all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him. Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!"

He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. "Thanks," he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach... but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story."

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse. God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way. Look for good in others.

Is it just me

                                                                       Kid Cudi
                                                                        Keenan Milton
.... or does anyone else think this kid named Cudi looks exactly like the late
great Keenan Milton. I might just have to give his music a chance now.

what we're doing...5 a.m. edition

this is what time we left to go to the fortress of solitude aka middleton library. peep the time, and the temperature... in southern louisiana.

this is what i was doing. highlighting important points in a 15 page cluster fuck of social issues. did you know that food is a $475 billion dollar industry in the US alone. wrap your mind around that

j is always on the fuckin' computer, maybe more than me. here he is, jokerizing a picture of me ala heath ledger. i'm not going to post that on here, but trust, the shit looks scarily similar to the late great actor.

all the while, i was not wearing shoes.

street lights on grey's

i don't know if this was really on grey's anatomy but even if it wasn't, whoever did this worked it in perfectly. this is probably my favorite song off of 808's and heartbreak. it reminds me so much of 'dont stop believing' and i'd be willing to bet that's what inspired this song. either way, enjoi.

i fucking hate school... but i like education.

i don't mind being educated. as a matter of fact, you can consider "get educated" one of the mottos we live by here at bsbcbu. we're all knowledge hungry. like rakim said you've got to "know the ledge". but i'll be got damned if i have to sit through anymore pointless 90 minute sessions about deviance and the differences between single parent and dual parent families. but it's that time of year, when my vice of cigarette smoking and caffeine rear their ugly fucking heads. so forgive my lack of blog updates. the above picture represents what i've been doing the last few days. oh yeah, that and watching the dark knight in the comfort of my home any chance i get.

tom penny is a magician

If I were ever granted three wishes I think the last one would definitely be to "harness the gnarness'' of Tom Penny. While most of my peers were dreaming of the new jordans, being rappers, football, basketball players etc.. I remember sitting in class imagining myself skating like Mr. Penny. Pulling ultra proper floaty front flips in really baggy clothes and of course wearing my beanies all the way over my eyes. Tom Penny is a beast.

can't you tell that I came from the dope game...

I don't have a problem with anyone. I enjoy seeing everyone around me prosper and succeed because isn't that what america is about? but to the people that I really consider familia I hope nothing for the best for and can't wait for the day that we're all successful and flourishing.

on that note, we've got a little thing going on down here in louisiana that people need to take notice of, and some of my close friends are standing right beside me breaking down walls in a normally conservative environment.

enter the dope. game

straight outta b. aura (baton rouge) the dope. game is run by none other than c. howells, b. willa, and eigh-jay. don't let the name fool you, this isn't the new shawty lo clothing line. with heavy references to 90s pop culture and a steady growing following, the dope. game is already making waves in south louisiana.

and before you ask, no paid advertisement here, folks. show love and that's exactly what this is. crooks & castles, the hundreds, play cloths, all that stuff is great, but you don't need to bring sand to the beach.

they just dropped a new hoody via their online store that is inspired by one of my favorite movies, back to the future (hopefully they were referencing part II, the best one) and if you're looking for some 'dope' (pun intended) winterwear, check it out.

also peep the dope. blog if you're looking for ways to pass the time, info on new music and kicks, or you just want to laugh at them like I do from to time (I kid, I kid).

dope. kids

note: they were dressed as "the cool kids" for halloween.

p.s. I'm still waiting on a free shirt or something.

i hate the rain.

I don't know if it's the day to day weather changes here or if it's the stress of finals and work, but I've just been the grouchiest, most aggravated motherfucker in the world the last 2-3 days. I seriously want nothing more than to just dig a hole in the ground and stick my head into it for a while, but that's not really an option. I guess in reality, it's just back to the saga, back to the script. I have one learned one thing in the last week and people (my parents, my friends, girlfriends, best friends, teachers, everyone) have been telling me this my entire life, and it's really starting to settle in right now.... money can't buy happiness.

nike boots

The first time I played this song at work, the people in the store were looking at me like I was crazy. Needless to say, Wale is definitely on my list of people to look for. Chris Robinson on point with the direction.

breakfast of champions

First things first, an GOOD mixtape (not like the degradation 3) dropped today in the form of the Clipse's Road to Till the Casket Drops. I fuck with the Clipse heavy, as they are in my top 5, and I'm already addicted to this joint. That and 808's and Heartbreak is all I will be listening to for the rest of 2008. I suggest you go here and download it. Thanks to thedopegame.com for reminding me it dropped, and complex and play cloths for putting this joint together.
Next on our agenda is today's nutritional adventures. Today, J and I hit up the wal-mart neighborhood market because we needed to eat. on our journey, we came across three essential products every kitchen needs.
Mrs. Freshley's Fudge Brownies

Batman Fruit Roll-Ups

Kevin Garnett Wheaties. Peep the 2008 NBA Champions label... fuck you Kobe.

Sunday, November 30, 2008

that's how I feel about this weekend, so to speak.
fuck it.
nothing is more aggravating than when people don't show up for work and then pull the "oh, I thought I told you I wasn't going to be there"
o really?
then why the hell didn't you answer the 6 phone calls, 3 voicemails, and 2 text messages? didn't get them huh? isn't that coincidence.
anyway, I don't know how many of you are actually reading this blog, hopefully it's more than 3, but I hope you enjoy these mindless ramblings, and the ones that actually do matter.
anyway... there's a cool blog you guys should check out. it's the personal blog of one of my favorite writers/directors, kurt sutter, the guy who wrote for the shield and now writes and directs sons of anarchy.
if you get a moment, check it out. some of his views are really screwed up, but he writes great television.

over and out.

I want this.

I don't have much brand loyalty. When it comes to vehicles, I want everything from american muscle cars to italian sports cars to english suvs. As far as beverage and food choices, I'll pretty much eat anything good.
the only two things I find myself really loyal to are the swoosh and the jumpman.
however, over the last year or so, a new brand has joined the ranks.
when I think of where I want to be in 5 years, I think of this.

this was the line outside of the hundreds los angeles at 2 a.m. on black friday. if you've never heard of the hundreds, they're possibly the biggest thing coming out of california right now in regards to clothing PERIOD. two law school dropouts by the name of ben and bobby started this FIVE years ago and they've got this, a new worth of a couple mill, two flagship stores, more collaborations than I care to name, and over 400 retailers.
this isn't outside of toys r us the night before the drop of elmo. this isn't best buy because they've giving away 60 inch flat screens for $100. this is a brand you've probably never heard of, selling t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans, with a couple hundred kids just sitting outside the store.
wanna talk about brand loyalty? how about burning the shirt off your back for a free logo t-shirt. think that's crazy?

he didn't.
and when the sun started rising, it didn't slow down either. these guys had people lined up for hours on end.

you've got people sitting outside, doing their HOMEWORK on the street corner, all so that they can save $10 here, $30 here, on clothing, that they would have probably bought anyway.

and for what? all for T-SHIRTS. that's loyalty. that's a movement. that's more than just liking the graphic on the front of a piece of cotton. that's the power of connecting with the youth of america. and that is what I want.

oh, and by the way, those collaborations that I mentioned earlier, the ones I said were too many to name. well here's one I will mention because on a personal level it relates to my youth and time spent with my family whom I love dearly.

anything is possible. see you in 5 years.

Give thanks...

ahh.. another year by, another I'm not getting back. time sure does fly.
well for starters, tuesday to today has been a rush. I was running through the halls at school at one moment, and then I was eating hot and spicy mcchicken's in a drunken stupor at 2:30 a.m. the next.
After roughly 9 or so hours of being on road altogether, I was able to see my family whom I love so much and got to enjoy a winter home as well as some great FOOD.
if anyone reading this has an xbox 360, I would suggest left 4 dead and dc vs. mortal kombat with some of your spendings. very well worth the purchase.
as well, I did purchase some quality media at best buy, including the rocketeer (step your early 90s movie knowledge up), the inside man, and of course 808's and Heartbreak. go out and buy that album if you haven't already.
I'll have more to talk about tomorrow. I'm just really in a rush still. there's this thing called bayou classic going on and everyone I work with seems to be in a frenzy about it.

case of the mondays

today is sucking big time. weather looks shitty outside, like it's about to rain or some shit. school tomorrow, not looking forward to that, nor about pretending to be barack obama in my performance studies class.

anybody wear a 9.5? I got some piet mondrian sb's I need to unload. I might even get rid of my supreme backpack. need to start putting money aside for some real life shit. nah, scratch that, not selling my backpack.

monday night football tonight. need a win from the saints. debating on whether or not I'm going to play any on that game. need to get left 4 dead for 360, saw some videos of that shit, kind of ridiculous gameplay.

2 more days until!

re:cap

man... long busy weekend for real. started that shit off working friday, making some things shake, and then me and j hit up the white light night in mid-city. supposed to be a small vendor appreciation kind of thing, but in reality, that's all just an excuse for the uppity crowd to pretend they're into art and shit. lol there was beer though, so we took in the environment and tried to enjoy it.

bud light, not my favorite, but the best of what was available.

this is pretty much what the crowd looked like. nothing special really, art was overpriced, sub-par quality. I can't really get into events like this, they're really well put together, coordination wise that is, it's just the event itself is whatever.
that was all for friday. saturday, after some more work, we took off back to new orleans for the q-tip and cool kids show with the knux. now i'll be completely honest, i've never listened to the knux or the cool kids, but i had a pretty good idea of what to expect and i was pretty dead on.

no hate, but i can't get down with the cool kids. at least not after first listen. maybe if i listen to them some more, i'll start vibing with the boys, but to me, it just sounded like a bunch of "nintendo this, fruit loops that, nike sb, you ain't on these" bullshit. regardless, they rocked the crowd, the people there were lovin' the shit so props to the dudes, they did their thing.
after them, tip came on and to be honest, dude blew my mind. maybe it was the crazy ass dancing, or the facial expressions, but dude was live. got all in the crowd and everything.

last image of the weekend, which had me laughing outside the HOB because it's a commentary on how I NEVER want to be. of all the people standing outside the buses, waiting to meet the Cool Kids, 92% of them were dudes. seriously? nah, I'll pass. overall good show though, and a good weekend. props to my homegirl Monet gettin' on the mic and rockin' with the Cool Kids, didn't realize it was her until after the show.

busy thursday

yesterday was a busy day. I know, like every day isn't busy, huh.
first things first, took care of some business early in the morning, and then, it was off to pick up my latest purchase.

yeah, I'm digging these.

then, I hit up mike and we shot down to the crescent city to take care of some more business. went to re:fresh to holler at the homies cypher, lu and wayne. store was pretty quiet so we just cut it up about what's really good... women, pornos, women and pornos, the presidential election, the welcoming committee at the RNC, and the direction of music and streetwear. broke off my homies with some of that new bsbcbu winter 08' and let them know whats coming up.

wayne and lu watching the video from the RNC. wayne is deep into all the government conspiracy theory shit. getting away from all that, Cypher let me know that the next mixtape is coming real soon.

be sure to peep all my homies on myspace music.

and fuck with moneybags because we do.

money bags x bsbcbu is coming. no more bullshit, just real shit.

Inches.

I love sports, I love movies, I love Pacino, and I'm a fan of Oliver Stone. If you've never seen Any Given Sunday, go rent it, it should cost you like $2 bucks, hell, just go buy it for like $5 more. But this speech, this 4 minutes of video, will just about motivate you to do anything. Pacino is such a monster.

the tag team champs are back...

the nastiest hip-hop duo returns this dec. 1 with another mixtape classic Road to Till the Casket Drops. Yup, that's right, I'm talking about The Clipse. If you don't fuck with The Clipse already, climb out from under that rock and do me a favor. Run over to Best Buy and go buy their 2nd album Hell Hath No Fury. Then, run over to the bootleg man, and cop their WGIFC: Vol 3. Mixtape. That's their two most recent releases (exception, the RE:UP Gang CD, but I don't even mess with that one because it's basically WGIFC Vol. 3, just not as good).

Road to Till The Casket Drops will be up for download on Complex.com on Dec. 1... but until then.. here's the intro track.

UGHHCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.

download intro here
